This is a different kind of post for me today… no, I’m not going to talk about taking the time to look back at your journey or anything like that. I’m talking about literally, taking the time to look back, look behind you before you back up.
I’ve met some great people because of sites like twitter, including Jen of priorfatgirl.com – I even got to meet her in person recently. A couple years ago her family suffered a terrible loss; her mom was on a walk around the block with her grandson and was struck by a vehicle backing out of a driveway. Her heart stopped beating on the way to the hospital.
Twenty people in Minnesota have died in the last 10 years after being backed in to – most of them children. Nationwide there are two deaths and another 50 injuries a week. A week. No, this isn’t an epidemic, but it is entirely, 100% preventable if you just take a few extra seconds to make sure it’s clear behind you.
Jen and her family were featured on a segment on a local news channel last night that shows how difficult it can be to see behind you under the best of circumstances, but there are options… you can get a rear view camera fairly inexpensively. But really… if everyone just takes a few extra seconds and any time you do back up just take it slow, there is no reason every single one of these accidents couldn’t be prevented.
